Description
A fine antique violin, almost certainly French and we estimate to have been made in the late 19th century.
Very nicely made and fine-sounding “anonymous” violin. It has a characteristic well rounded scroll, slightly open nicks to the f-holes and lamp blacking so beloved of Paris makers of this period. The condition is generally very good though there has been a neatly repaired crack visible to the bottom of the back but well outside of the bass bar.
It’s an easy violin to manipulate; the response is rapid; all parts of the register resonate and modulate well and it’s physically comfortable. The top and back have well pronounced arches and the purfling is handmade. The varnish shows signs of renovation and there is wear and marks to the sides – this violin has clearly been played a lot. The sound is broad, bright, smooth and woody all at once – loud and clear but still quite complex. It sounds great.
Highly recommended for an aspiring soloist on a budget.
Length of back 35.7cm, stop 130/195mm, total length 58.7cm
